Kutna Hora

Why you should visit Kutná Hora.

Prague isn't the only amazing city the Czech Republic has to offer. Kutna Hora is less than an hour away from Prague and well worth the visit. It was the political and economic center in the 14th and 15th centuries and one of the richest city in Bohemia because of its deposits of silver ore.

Kutna Hora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site  filled with beautiful, Gothic architecture. Some notable churches and places to visit are : Church of Our Lady (Chrám Nanebevzetí Pany Marie), Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba), Church of St. John Nepomuk (Kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého), Church of Ursuline Convent (Klášter rádu sv. Voršily) and two of the most popular : Church of St. Barbara (Chrám Svaté Barbory) and the Sedlec Ossuary (Sedlecká Kostnice).

Saint Barbara's Church is one of the most well known Gothic style churches in central Europe that was constructed in 1388. The construction was interuppted during the Hussite Wars and it wasn't completely finished until 1905. Although much of the church was changed into a more Baroque style, you can still see traces of Gothic inspriation. The glass windows and medieval frescoes are not to be missed inside the church!

The Sedlec Ossuary (better known as the "bone church") is a Roman Cathlic chapel that is beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints. The church is well known for it's unusual decorations : artistically arranged chandeliers, garlands and structures made entirely of human bones (40,000- 70,000 to be exact). The cemetery attracted so many eager to reserve burial spots because of the precious soil that was sprinkled over the grounds from the Holy Land in 1278. Thousands were buried here and during the 1400s an expansion of the church was necessary to house the growing number of the deceased. According to urban legends, partially blind monks were left to care for the chapel and required to undergo the hefty task of relocating the bones of the dead. One such monk went mad and started to make things from the bones that began to decorate the interior of the chapel. In the late 1800s František Rint was hired to repair and redecorate the chapel and created a coat of arms for the Schwarzenberg Family (the owners at the time) keeping to the bone theme along with a few chandeliers and candelabras.
