Things to do in Prague - Parks in Žižkov
No matter the season, the city of the 100 spires is one of the most beautiful places to walk by at any time of the year. Therefore, we thought it would be cool to share some Prague spots not very well-known or somehow underrated by the popular tourist maps, tourist guides and tourists as such, be it because they are a bit away from the centre, or because they don’t offer more than a good view from the city.
Still, sooner or later one gets tired of taking friends and family to Old Town Square and to the Castle. In Prague 3 for example, there are several parks: Vítkov, Parukařka and Riegrovy Sady a.k.a Riegrač. Now that the sky is is blue and the weather allows, what’s better then a walk in the park (and why not with booze) while enjoying a relaxing time in the grass?
Vitkov, at the lower part of Žižkov and its relatively easy to find: If you see a guy on a horse and you are not in Venceslau Square, you’re there :) The army museum is located halfway to the top and the National Museum, a kind of memorial for Czechoslovakian history, is situated at the top, right behind the biggest equestrian statue in the world: Jan Žižka on his horse, overlooking the city. If you sit next to the stairs, you can see Petřin, Strahov, The National Theatre…. everything, really :) The back of the part stretches to Jarov (near where the University of Economic University dorms are), and midway there are a couple of swingers and has a lot of corners for private picnics and god knows what else. Cool for skating too ;-)
The monument was unveiled in 1950 on the anniversary of the battle on Vítkov, in which the Hussites under the leadership of Jan Žižka defeated the Crusaders' troops in this place. The bronze monument has admirable size: it is 22 m high including the pedestal and the total weight is 16.5 t.
If Riegrač is the place for beer in the summer, then Parukařka is the place for locals, independently of the time of the year. Home of the bunker, a pub in an actual bunker, the park often offers culturar activites: concerts and the pub in the park are frequent, movie screenings and the park as such is pleasant for a walk, although not as pleasant as Riegrač.
Parukařka
Riegrovy Sady is located on the opposite side, if one could say it, of Vitkov. The park is clean, has public toilets, and a natural amphitheatre, that leads not to a theatre play, but to an awesome view of the Prague castle.
If you are interested in this area of Prague, why not join some of the Student Zone events in Riegrovy Sady and Žižkov? Both locations are to hold some of Prague Students Welcome Weeks events.
